Jacky Cheung Hok-Yau is a Hong Kong singer and actor from the mid-1980s to the present. The Chinese-language media refers to him, Aaron Kwok, Andy Lau and Leon Lai as the Cantopop Four Heavenly Kings (四大天王).[5] Cheung is nicknamed the "God of Songs" (歌神). However he is the second person to have the title. Former Cantopop star Sam Hui is generally considered the "first generation God of Songs".[3][6] In an interview with Uncle Ray, Jacky stated that this title was more appropriate for Sam Hui since he actually wrote and popularised songs.[7]
Cheung is known for his rich baritone voice.[8] He is also one of the first Hong Kong singers to add a rock and roll quality to his voice, citing singers such as Elton John, Barry Manilow and Billy Joel as key influences. He has also experimented with different genres of rock, such as alternative rock, light grunge and art rock. He married Hong Kong actress May Lo Mei Mei on February 15, 1996 in London. with whom he has two daughters. [9]
